Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ)

What is a Credit Union?

A not-for-profit member owned financial cooperative with a common bond organized for the benefit of the members.  The Board of Directors consists of volunteers taken from the membership.  There are no stock holders.

What makes a Credit Union so much better than other financial institutions?

First, a credit union is owned and operated by the people (members) they serve.  Second, credit unions are non-profit organizations, formed and managed by members who want to have more control over their financial destiny.

When you join FAFCU, you automatically become a shareholder.  The earnings of the Credit Union are used to pay dividends, cover the cost of operations, build reserves and to provide reasonably priced financial services.

Is my money safe in the credit union?

Yes!  Credit unions are closely regulated and insured up to a minimum of $100,000.00 by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the strongest of all federally insured agencies of the Federal Government.

Who is eligible for membership with FAFCU?

Employees of the wholly or majority owned subsidiaries of the First American Corporation who work in the United States of America, as well as their spouses and the spouses of persons who died while within the field of membership of this credit union; employees of this credit union; persons retired as pensioners or annuitants from the above employment; members of their immediate families; and organizations of such persons my all join FAFCU as members.

What happens if I leave the First American family of companies?

Once a member, always a member.  The benefit of membership in the credit union is extended to you for life.  As long as your membership account with the credit union is in good standing and is not closed, you will remain eligible for all our services.

How do I become a member?

Follow these simple steps:

  • Complete a membership account application and sign it where indicated.
  • Bring or send the applications with a check for $51.00 payable to FAFCU. The minimum deposit of $50.00 must remain in your account as long as the account is open. This is your "membership share account" in the credit union. You will not be eligible for any services until this deposit is made. The $1.00 is the lifetime membership fee and is not refundable.
  • In addition, due to the USA Patriot Act, all financial institutions are required to obtain, verify and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. Two forms of ID will be required. Acceptable forms of ID include: A valid State Drivers License or ID card, Passport, Military ID, Alien Identification Card and a Social Security Card.
  • If you don't live or work near a branch these things can be mailed to FAFCU
I don’t live near the branch, how can I make deposits and withdrawals?

Deposits can be made by direct deposit, by mail, by courier or through any depository ATM machine that displays the Star or Co-op logo.  Withdrawals can be requested by phone (and will be mailed to you the same day), by signed letter or fax, by direct debit to your account or any one of thousands of ATM machines all over the world.

To access your account we have ATM cards, Visa Check Cards, the FAST LINE, email statements, and all the traditional methods.

Is there a surcharge if I use the ATM?

We do not charge our members a surcharge; however other financial institutions may charge you a fee to use their ATM machines. To avoid surcharges look for an ATM machine that has the "Coop" logo or the "Surcharge Free" logo.

MORE QUESTIONS...

I can't pay the $50.00 all at once. What are my options?

Just pay the $1.00 membership fee and deposit $5.00 from each paycheck until you reach the $50.00 minimum balance. If you do it by direct deposit you won't even miss it!

Can I have my paycheck directly deposited into my account at the credit union? What about my spouse's paycheck?

Definitely. We accept direct deposits from companies that can initiate them.

Can I set up automatic deductions to other creditors from my Credit Union account?

Certainly.  Any merchant with your authorization and account number can send a charge to your account.

How can I be sure none of my confidential information will be shared with my manager(s) or fellow employees?

Keeping your financial information secure is an important responsibility that we take very seriously. We value your trust and handle your information with care. Our policies and procedures emphasize the importance of keeping our member's information confidential. Not only is this our policy, but sharing your information with anyone not unauthorized is strictly against the law.

What happens if my balance falls below $50.00?

The minimum balance to retain account services is $50.00.  If your balance falls below $50.00 you will be sent a notice that you must make a deposit.  You will not be eligible for loans, a checking account or other services if you do not have $50.00 in your account.

What are the rates for Credit Union loans?

The rate on your loan will be based on your FICO credit score and the type and term of the loan. Check the Rate Update on our website for our current rates. We publish a new one monthly even if the rates haven't changed.

I have poor credit and can't get a traditional bank account. Will I be able to open a Credit Union account?

We run all prospective members through Telecheck or Check Systems. If you have previously written bad checks that have not been made good you may be denied a checking account. You will still be able to open a savings account and apply for loans.
